Exploring and Belonging

This learning resource is focused on Masjid Noor, established in the 1970s in a former Methodist chapel in Huddersfield’s Thornton Lodge area, reflects the town’s history of migration and textile industry. As one of the first mosques in the area, it has remained a welcoming community hub, continuing to serve as an important place of worship. The participants in our Exploring and Belonging project choose Masjid Noor as one of the places they would like to research, On this page you will find resources all about Masjid Noor. The main resources is a reading book at two levels: Entry 1 and Entry 3. The reading book is available in different formats.

Reading Books

Masjid Noor Entry 1 Reading book

This reading book has been prepared by participants on the project in collaboration with the MESH team. The book has been prepared for learners working at Entry 1 level.

It has been prepared as a pdf which can then be printed. To print as an A5 booklet, open in Adobe Acrobat Reader. Choose print, then under ‘Page Sizing and Handling’ choose ‘Booklet’. Under ‘Booklet subset’ choose ‘Both Sides’. Under ‘Binding’ choose ‘left’. Orientation should be portrait. Now press print! The pdf will print in booklet form which can then be folded and stapled for use with learners.

Masjid Noor Entry 3 Reading Book

This reading book is the same as the one above, but it has been has been prepared for learners working at Entry 3+ and above

A New Life in Huddersfield: Memories of Partition and Migration.

The video A New Life in Huddersfield: Memories of Partition and Migration explores the personal accounts of individuals who migrated to Huddersfield, UK, in the aftermath of the Partition of India in 1947. It sheds light on their experiences of starting a new in a foreign land, the challenges they faced, and the memories they carry from their homeland. The documentary highlights the impact of migration on their identities and the cultural exchanges that shaped the community in Huddersfield. This film has been made as part of the Whiteline project and is reproduced here by kind permission of the Yorkshire Film Archive. 

Mosques in Britain

A set of slides offering information about mosques in Britain as well as in Huddersfield. They are for teachers to explore with their learners and include links and videos for additional support. The focus in these slides is the history of mosques, and their importance in British communities.

Prayer Beads

Exploring & Belonging participants discuss the different prayer beads available at the masjid, and talk about what they say when they are praying.

The Imam at Masjid Noor talks a little bit about the building’s history before it was a Masjid.
